Lisa Bradley is a composer based in Dudley, West Midland (UK) She showed early musical promise (as well as mathematical promise), but also had childhood illnesses, including suffering an epileptic seizure at the age of 6. When she left school she started working, but mental health issues meant she had to give work up by the age of 20. At 29 she had a son, but was only then diagnosed with severe epilepsy and has since needed 24/7 care.
In 2012 she started lessons with local teacher Nathan Rose and started to appreciate a range of music styles. She started to do Grade exams, but In 2018 she had a bad seizure and damaged her right shoulder. She couldn’t play piano for 18 months, so Nathan suggested switching to music theory.
Over 18 months Lisa took theory exams, passing Grades 1 to 5. Once she recovered from the shoulder injury she started back on piano and passed Grade 5 piano. Another injury in 2019 forced still more theory exams!
In 2020 she passed Grade 6 piano. She needed piano to go to when she felt low; as she puts it, "piano helped bring parts of myself back"
In 2022 her father died and Nathan suggested that Lisa try writing her own compositions as a way of coping. Over time, she wrote a Sonatina for piano, influenced by classical styles.
In 2023 she made contact with Christopher Norton for the first time. She was working on Homecoming from the Country preludes Collection for Grade 7 and he helped her with that, but also loved her new Sonatina.
Lisa passed Grade 7 in 2024 and in the same year 80days published her Sonatina, arranged by Mr. Norton for 2 pianos and optional strings and retitled Junior Concerto.
Lisa's Junior Concerto is a semi-classical work. It has already had performances around the world, including one in Mexico! Here's what a mock-up of the first movement sounds like:
Lisa has kept writing and her most recent publication for 80days Publishing is called The Journey, which musically depicts the journey of her life - the fun times as well as the struggles.
Lisa: "even on days I can’t get out the house or off my bed I listen to music"
Being a musician is definitely a journey. This 4-movement Suite depicts Lisa's journey (and hopefully other people's journeys as well)
Lisa: "No matter what your feel in life music will always be there, I hope you can feel the emotions running through each movement of this journey"
The 1st movement is relaxed, meditative and calm.
The 2nd movement is more upbeat and hopeful.
The 3rd is jollier still!
The 4th movement is more philosophical.
Lisa's latest venture is a book of Halloween-themed pieces. Here is a sneak preview of one of them:
